Art Deco Britain

The Art deco movement began in Europe in the early decades of the 20th century. L'Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris during 1925 served to popularise this new decorative style. Art Deco design is characterized by streamlined curves and geometrical forms and architects across Britain incorporated this style into architectural commissions for many public and private buildings. Art Deco found its way into all aspects of design from architecture to art and furniture to shipbuilding.

Throughout Britain there are some very fine examples of Art Deco buildings, many in London but also some signifiant, beautiful buildings in many smaller towns and cities. This website contains profiles of some of these buildings, ranging from houses and hotels, to underground stations and cinemas.
